RAIGANJ TOWN

Raiganj is The District Head Quarter and owing to its location importance. The town has obtained the Municipal status in the year 1951 on 19th JULY. Raiganj has always regional growth centre for economic growth and employment with a vast rural hinter land. Population as per 2001 census is 165212 with a rapid growth. The town is a ‘B’ category one covering an area of 10.76 Sq.km.The town is situated at a distance  400 km from the state capital Kolkata and is connected by means of National Highway 34 and B.G line by rail.

LOCATION AND LOCAL FEATURES

The town Raiganj is located in the lower part of North Bengal. It is the District Head Quarter of Uttar Dinajpur.It is situated in the latitude of 26’19” N and longitude of 89;28” E.The town is located on the National Highway No.34 and is about 75 km to the North of Malda and about 215 km south of Siliguri.To the East the town is linked with another important town Kaliaganj,located adjacent to Bangladesh at a distance of 20 km.The western part of the town is linked with Kathihar in Bihar, by a Broad Gauge line and also capital Kolkata, Kulik, a tributary of river Nagar flows from North-West to South-East and the town is on the left bank of it. Raiganj is 425 km (264 mi) from Kolkata and 181 km (112 mi) from Siliguri.

AREA

The area of this town is about10.76 sq.km.But the present growing tendency and trend of urbanization in the area adjacent to this town are also remarkable. The agglomeration areas are also experiencing this trend. Now The vast areas under Birghai, Maraikura, Rupahar, Bahin, karnojora is also growing with the population like the town of Raiganj and this population is dependent on Raiganj town.

FESTIVAL

“Durga Puja” is the most favourite festible in Raiganj. otherwise “Kali puja”,”Biswakarma Puja”,”Lokenath Puja”, “Saraswati Puja” also take place here.

BACKGROUND:

In the 2011 election of the state assembly, Mohit Sengupta of INC won the Raiganj Seat,Defeating his nearest rivals Kironmoy Nanda of SP .In  2006 and 2001  Chittaranjan Ray of INC defeated Dilip Kumar Das of NCP and Harinarayan Roy of CPI(M) respectively. In 1996, Dilip Kumar Das of INC defeated Khagendranath Sinha of CPI(M). In 1991, Khagendra Nath Sinha of CPI(M) defeated Dilip Das of INC. In 1987, Khagendra Nath Sinha of CPI(M) defeated Dipendra Barman of INC. In 1982, Dipendra Barman of INC defeated Khagendra Nath Sinha of CPI(M). In 1977, Khagendra Nath Sinha of CPI(M).

As per orders of Delimitation Commission, assembly constituency no. 35, Raiganj, is composed of Raiganj municipality and Bahin, Maraikup, Gouri, Kamalabari I and Kamalabatri II gram panchayats of Raiganj community development block. Rampur and Sitgram gram panchayats of Raiganj block are part of Hemtabad (SC) assembly constituency. Barua and Birghoi gram panchayats of Raiganj block are part of Kalaiaganj (SC) assembly constituency.

In 2009, Deepa Dasmunsi of INC won in the Raiganj (Lok Sabha constituency).
